Cesar Chavez, this vibrant facility offers eight high-quality Laykold courts and a dedicated practice wall, perfect for players of all ages and skill levels. As a shared partnership between the City of Austin and Austin Independent School District, it seamlessly blends community recreation with school athletics, providing lighted hard courts that shine under the Texas sun or stars. Since September 1, 2014, the center has operated as a completely free play facility, eliminating reservations and fees to make tennis truly open to everyone—no pro shop, no barriers, just pure court time on a first-come, first-served basis.
Imagine stepping onto these well-maintained courts, surrounded by the energetic pulse of downtown Austin. Located just minutes from Lady Bird Lake and the bustling streets of the city, the Austin High Tennis Center is more than a sports venue; it’s a hub where locals gather to rally, practice, and build connections. The eight courts, equipped with reliable lighting for evening sessions, cater to casual drop-ins, intense drills against the practice wall, or friendly matches with fellow enthusiasts. During the school year, public access kicks off at 5:30 PM weekdays until 10 PM, extending to 7 AM to 10 PM in summer and holidays, ensuring ample opportunities to squeeze in a game around your schedule. Street parking and nearby lots make it easy to arrive, even when things get busy.
Tied to the storied legacy of Stephen F. Austin High School—founded in 1881 and boasting a rich athletic history—the center supports the Maroons’ tennis program while inviting the wider community to share the space. Austin High’s on-campus facilities, including these tennis courts alongside gymnasiums, a track, and fields for baseball, football, and more, reflect a commitment to fostering athletic excellence. The school’s athletes have racked up thousands of victories, with alumni like golf legend Ben Crenshaw and MLB star Don Baylor carrying the Maroons’ spirit forward. Here, high school players sharpen their skills during the day, passing the baton to public users in the evenings for inclusive play that echoes Austin’s vibrant sports culture.
What sets the Austin High Tennis Center apart is its emphasis on accessibility and community spirit. No cost means no excuses—whether you’re a beginner lobbing your first serves, an intermediate player honing volleys on the practice wall, or a seasoned competitor seeking a quick hit. The Laykold surface provides consistent bounce and durability, ideal for everything from solo sessions to doubles showdowns. Often shared with pickleball enthusiasts, the courts buzz with diverse activity, creating a welcoming atmosphere where newcomers mingle with regulars. Pro manager Joe Furiosa oversees operations, ensuring the facility remains in top condition, complete with bathrooms for convenience (though showers are unavailable).
In a city renowned for its tennis scene—like the historic Caswell Tennis Center or South Austin’s award-winning courts—the Austin High Tennis Center stands out for its free model and prime location. It’s downtown-adjacent, highly walkable, and perfectly positioned for post-work rallies or weekend warriors. Families bring kids for Quick Start-inspired fun on the scaled courts, adults unwind with sunset sets, and teams organize informal leagues. The center’s evolution from a school-exclusive asset to a public gem underscores Austin’s dedication to health, fitness, and outdoor recreation.

The tennis courts are in serious need of maintenance. There are cracks everywhere and pieces of surface coming off. I can deal with the annoyance if a ball hitting a crack, but someone can get hurt when their feet get stuck on a crack while sprinting for a ball. I have also seen water bubble up through the cracks a few days after bigger rain storms

Good courts open to public when school is not in session or team is not practicing; they are also sometimes reserved for events/tournaments. The court surfaces and nets are in good condition but when it gets windy, there is no good wind protection particularly in the courts upstairs. Also, the lights are borderline useless, with a lot of them burned out (not working) and the few that work are not powerful enough for good visibility. It is nice that they have separate pickleball courts!

Excellent courts. Very well maintained and plentiful. Very reliable lights. Watch out for some leagues in the mornings on weekends but solid.

It's free to the public after school hours and weekends as well it's in an amazing location next to the river and running trails, but its way run down and trashy and last time i went on a Sunday all but one of the entrance gates were locked. UPDATE: Club house side courts still locked up. Courts have been repainted not resurfaced with the cracks filled in courts still uneven and completely covered in a layer of dirt/dust so ball bounce is unpredictable. Toss in being near the river and it is often much too windy which is also why i think the courts are covered in dust the wind is bringing it in from somewhere.
